The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at University Hospital offers a unique career opportunity for Registered Nurses with various levels of experience who want to work in Critical Care. The ICU is dedicated to providing orientation, education, and training that is catered to experience level, to assist nurses in making the move.

The Intensive Care Unit at University Hospital is committed to Critical Care Services Ontario’s Practice Standards for Critical Care Nursing in Ontario and is comprised of two distinct units: Medical-Surgical ICU (MSICU) which has 25 beds and the Cardiac Surgery Recovery Unit (CSRU) which has 14 beds. The (MSICU) is a level three critical care unit that specializes in the care of various patient populations such as: medical-surgical, cardiac, neurological, neurosurgical, multi-organ transplantation, critical illness recovery patients.

The CSRU specializes in the post-operative care of patients who have had cardiovascular surgery such as bypass and valve replacements and heart transplants. Together the MSICU and CSRU provides exemplary continuous care of all critically ill patients requiring intensive technological, pharmacological and paramedical support delivered in a cohesive, cooperative, integrated manner. The physical and psychosocial needs of the patient and family are supported on an ongoing basis. The ICU supports and participates in ongoing research, quality improvement and multidisciplinary activities.

Regular Full-Time and Regular Part-Time Available

Rate of Pay: $39.07 per hour - $56.00 per hour

Hours of Work:             37.5 or 22.5 hours per week

Qualifications

 
  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current BLS for Healthcare Providers course: BLS-HCP(C) for which you can provide proof upon request
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred
  • Minimum one year of recent medical or surgical nursing experience
  • Recent, relevant Critical Care Level 2 or 3 experience preferred
  • Critical Care Nursing Certificate CNCC (c) preferred
  • Demonstrated excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated effective organizational skills involving time management and prioritization
  • Demonstrated ability to manage change in a dynamic environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and self-directed learning
  • Demonstrated commitment to the employee performance development competencies
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency with Automated Clinical Systems
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to shared leadership and team-based decision making
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC’s vision, purpose and values
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis

Immunization Requirements:

  • Before beginning employment at LHSC, all new hires will be required to: 
  • Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, Tetanus/ Diphtheria/Polio; Meningitis;  
  • Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing (two step);  
  • Provide proof of Health Canada-approved COVID-19 vaccination reflective of Ontario Health’s current definition of being fully vaccinated
