The Research Lab Technician 2 will apply their expertise and knowledge to a research project under the direction of a Principal Investigator (PI) and will carry out original and independent research to assist the PI in achieving their research outcomes in the area of Cardiovascular Disease Research. The role will support and operationalize new and innovative research opportunities, and build and run experiments using animal models. The Research Lab Technician 2 will help maintain routine lab work and rodent colonies including genotyping. The position will play a role in supporting the training of students, and in resolving issues that arise in the research environment.

 

Temporary Full Time 

Rate of Pay:          $27.43 - $34.28

Hours of Work:     35 hours per week

Duration:               1 year, renewable

 

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Maintaining genetically modified mice at the lab including breeding, weaning, and genotyping, etc
  • Conducts experiments using animal models, and prepares and ensures adherence to protocols (e.g. cultured cardiomyocyte isolation) using specialized equipment (e.g. echocardiograph)
  • Adapts pre-existing methodologies and technology to solve problems and provides
  • Provides technical expertise regarding research projects
  • Assists with training and supervising students to ensure the safe, efficient and optimal operation of the facility, and to help them achieve their research goals
  • Implements, checks, and maintains laboratory safety procedures

Qualifications

 
  • Completion of a three-year full-time specialization post-secondary in relevant area of study or equivalent education and experience required
  • 1 year of experience working in a lab setting required
  • Demonstrated lab skills including western blot analysis, RT-PCR, cell culture, biochemical analysis, etc.
  • Demonstrated animal model experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of physiology, cell/molecular biology, and biochemistry
  • Ability to work independently
  • Flexible and adaptable to a changing work environment
  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the principles of patient and family-centered care
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
