The Nurse Practitioner is a self-directed advanced practice nurse prepared at the graduate and post-graduate level, who demonstrates a high level of autonomy working to scope, both independently and within a collaborative practice model. Using advanced assessment skills and a sound knowledge of clinical therapeutics, the NP demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge base in Cardiac Care and exhibits a high degree of clinical competence in caring for cardiac surgery patients with acute and specialized healthcare needs.

The NP in the Cardiac Care Program will report to the Director of Cardiac Care and will work collaboratively with surgeons and members of the Cardiac Care program. The NP will interact daily with the interdisciplinary team to manage, direct and provide comprehensive care for a select patient population. The NP works with key stakeholders to provide advanced care that optimizes patient outcomes and enhances safety, effectiveness and accessibility. The NP in this program will engage in scholarly activities and advance knowledge by providing clinical leadership, identify opportunities for improving patient care, advancing best practices, promoting professional education and engaging in research.

With a focus on service excellence and patient safety, principal responsibilities include:

Primary responsibilities of this position include inpatient rounds and medical management of intermediate and acute care level patients, planning and discharge of patients, and participation with surgeons and residents on inpatient consults.  This position is to provide medical planning and management of cardiac surgery patients in the hospital, on a post cardiac surgery unit.

Working alongside a team of residents and NPs, the Nurse Practitioner is responsible in the assessment, care and management of post cardiac surgery patients, performing such functions as making rounds, physical examinations and other patient’s examinations, and arranging for patient referrals. The Nurse Practitioner will diagnose comorbidities, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe all medications and perform select medical procedures as they relate to the post cardiac surgery population.

All duties and responsibilities of the NP conform to professional standards and hospital guidelines.

Temporary Full-Time

Rate of Pay:      $57.26 per hour - $69.76 per hour

Hours of Work:  37.5 hours per week

Duration:            6 months

Qualifications

• Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing
• Current registration in the extended class and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Minimum of five (5) years recent related experience in an acute Cardiac Care environment
• Current member of the Nurse Practitioner's Association of Ontario (NPAO) or Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO)
• Mandatory Current Professional Liability Protection
• Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course: BLS-HCP (C)
• Demonstrated experience and leadership in clinical practice, education, program development and research
• Expertise in functioning in an inter-disciplinary health care environment
• Recent experience in the treatment of patients with Arrhythmia preferred
• Ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues and therapeutic relationships with patients and families
• Expertise in critical thinking, clinical problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution
• Effective organizational, conceptual and leadership skills
• Ability to provide project management?skills to promote?evidence-based strategies and initiatives for Cardiac Care and ability to work in partnership with relevant LHSC staff and physicians 
• Experience in/or understanding research, program development and evaluation
• Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal relations and communication skills, both oral and written
• Demonstrated excellence as a role model for clinical leadership
• Demonstrated experience with clinical teaching in an academic environment
• Advanced presentation skills including the application of adult learning principles, change theory and systems theory in a clinical environment
• Demonstrated excellence in clinical practice
• Self-directed and function independently
• Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
• Demonstrated skill in insight, self-awareness and self-management consistent with high emotional intelligence
• Demonstrated ability to express oneself assertively and effectively in a non-judgmental and respectful manner
• Demonstrated experience and leadership in education and research
• Ability to function as an independent practitioner and a collaborative team member
• Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution
• Proven ability to act empathically, while establishing and maintaining productive relationships
• Ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations and multiple demands
• Computer proficiency with Internet, Microsoft Office 365 including Outlook, Automated Clinical Systems and Virtual meeting platforms
• Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
• Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety
• Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC’s Vision, Purpose, and Values
• Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis

Immunization Requirements:  

Before beginning employment at LHSC, all new hires will be required to:
