Psychological Associate - Psychology

Eligibility Criteria (patient population and timin of involvement along patient trajectory of care)

The position provides support to children with cancer and brain tumours and their families and school communities to address school-related challenges associated with childhood cancer/brain tumour treatment and its sequelae. Some services are provided to selected hematology patients.

  • All school-aged children receiving treatment for cancer/brain tumours beginning at diagnosis (or when a child enters school for the first time) and continuing throughout treatment. Services may continue during active follow-up if required.   
  • Children at risk for or with evidence of long-term sequelae which may affect school functioning (e.g, neurocognitive challenges, sensory challenges) continue to be eligible for services during active follow-up and AfterCare.
  • School-aged siblings of preschool children receiving treatment (at diagnosis and during treatment).

Duties/Role:

  • Beginning at diagnosis (or when a child enters school for the first time), education, counselling and support for the child, his/her parent(s) and siblings around school-related concerns during treatment 
  • In collaboration with other Pediatric Oncology Team members, an assessment of the child?s physical and psycho-emotional readiness to return to school activities with consideration of risk factors for school adjustment challenges 
  • Consultation/collaboration with Pediatric Oncology Team members, families, and school personnel to develop a plan to meet the child?s academic, social-emotional, and physical needs at school; or alternatively, the development of a plan to allow the child to continue with education at home/hospital while maintaining connections with their school. 
  • Provision of education/resources to school personnel working the child with cancer/brain tumour and/or their siblings; individualized information and recommendations about the physical, social-emotional, and academic needs of the child with cancer/brain tumour   
  • Provision of developmentally-appropriate information about the child?s situation to peers/classmates to address their concerns and encourage their support for the affected child/siblings (in keeping with family?s wishes) 
  • Regular re-evaluation of the child?s school adjustment and needs throughout treatment; provision of support to patient and families and consultation/education/information to school communities as required 
  • Education of school personnel about potential and existing treatment-related challenges that may affect school functioning; monitoring children at risk for or with evidence of long-term sequelae which may affect school functioning during treatment, active follow-up, and Aftercare; advocacy to help families navigate the school system (in collaboration with neuropsychologist, Transitions Counsellor, other Oncology/Afterdare team members) 
  • Consultation with oncology team about school-related issues and concerns which may impact child?s care, referrals to/collaboration with other Pediatric Oncology Team members or supports in the community, when appropriate 
  • Consultation/collaboration with school personnel around death and grief issues, when required 
  • Attendance/participation in team meetings.

Other duties:

  • Program and resource development and administration
  • Professional development to maintain knowledge of current practice issues in oncology, the education system and psychology that may inform service provision
  • As time allows, research, program evaluation, presentations at conferences or in the community
  • Participation in the education of graduate students, pre-doctoral clinical psychology residents
  • Participation in professional activities as related to the practice of psychology at LHSC 

Regular Full-Time

Rate of Pay:               $46.79 per hour - $58.48 per hour

Hours of Work:           30.00 hours per week 

Qualifications

 
  • Successful completion of a Master's degree in Psychology
  • Registration with the College of Psychology of Ontario for independent practice as a Psychological Associate including the declared competencies to communicate a psychological diagnosis and to treat with psychotherapy
  • Five (5) years of recent related experience, experience working in a hospital setting (preferred)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team and consult/collaborate with professionals in the schools and the community
  • Knowledge about the school system, special education legislation and services; understanding of psychoeducational/neuropsychological assessment, diagnoses and learning exceptionalities; knowledge about the impact of serious illness on children and families 
  • Valid driver?s license (position requires travel to schools within the hospital?s catchment area)

  • Advanced recent experience with psychological assessment and treatment of patients with complex mental health and medical problems
  • Proficient experience with psychotherapy (controlled act) with patients with complex mental health and medical problems
  • Advanced ability to diagnose learning disabilities, neuropsychological or psychologically-based neurotic, psychotic, or personality disorders
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of relevant Ontario legislation (e.g., Mental Health Act, PHIPA, HCCA) 
  • Demonstrated advanced ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships
  • Demonstrated advanced verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks effectively
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to patient and staff safety
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC's Vision, Purpose and Values
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
