Nurse Practitioner - Children's Care - Paediatric Complex Care for Kids Ontario Program

The Nurse Practitioner is a self-directed, highly autonomous, experienced advanced practice nurse prepared at the graduate and post-graduate level, who demonstrates a high level of autonomy working to scope, both independently and within a collaborative practice model. The NP demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge base in Paediatrics and community health and exhibits a high degree of clinical competence in caring for children with acute and specialized Paediatric healthcare needs.

The NP in the Paediatric Complex Care Program will report to the Director of Paediatric Inpatients and Ambulatory Care and will work in primarily an outpatient setting. The NP in this program will provide clinical leadership, identify opportunities for improving patient care and advancing best practices, and facilitate the development of knowledge of staff involved in this patient population.  Working in a collaborative team environment the NP leads the coordination of integrated care with other specialties within the hospital and affiliated organizational sectors. Finally, the NP will be a key stakeholder and change agent in program development and research.

With a focus on service excellence and patient safety, principal responsibilities include: demonstrating a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in caring for tertiary level Paediatric patients requiring interventions,  providing independent clinical care and leadership to the Complex Care  program and multidisciplinary team, independently diagnosing, ordering investigations and prescribing treatments, , and consulting and collaborating with physician partners as needed; participating in the Outpatient NP Led clinic model;  working collaboratively on innovative program initiatives, such as virtual clinics to expand access to care and running our NP-developed Complex Care Satellite clinics;  playing a leadership role representing our program on Provincial and National committees and working groups, and participating in policy and procedure development; performing research and scholarly activities; delivering and participating in education and professional development activities, including teaching medical, nursing, and community members about complex care and technology use, and liaising with community groups including Home and Community Care, Schools, daycares; performing activities to further develop and strengthen the nursing profession; and performing other duties consistent with the role.

All duties and responsibilities of the NP conform to professional standards and hospital guidelines.

Temporary Full-Time

Rate of Pay:         $58.95 per hour - $71.85 per hour

Hours of Work:     37.5 hours per week

Duration:              Up to 5 months

Qualifications

 
  • Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing
  • Current registration in the extended class in any of the following specialties: Paediatrics or Primary Care and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Minimum of two (2) years recent related experience with a Paediatric population
  • Current member of the Nurse Practitioner's Association of Ontario (NPAO) or Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO)
  • Mandatory Current Professional Liability Protection
  • Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course: BLS-HCP (C)
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in clinical practice, education, program development and research
  • Expertise in functioning in an inter-disciplinary health care environment
  • Recent experience collaborating with external agencies and community partners preferred
  • Ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues and therapeutic relationships with patients and families
  • Expertise in critical thinking, clinical problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution
  • Effective organizational, conceptual and leadership skills
  • Experience in/or understanding research, program development and evaluation
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal relations and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Demonstrated excellence as a role model for clinical leadership
  • Demonstrated experience with clinical teaching in an academic environment
  • Advanced presentation skills including the application of adult learning principles, change theory and systems theory in a clinical environmen
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical practice
  • Self-directed and function independently
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
  • Demonstrated skill in insight, self-awareness and self-management consistent with high emotional intelligence
  • Demonstrated ability to express oneself assertively and effectively in a non-judgmental and respectful manner
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in education and research
  • Ability to function as an independent practitioner and a collaborative team member
  • Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution
  • Proven ability to act empathically, while establishing and maintaining productive relationships
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations and multiple demands
  • Computer proficiency with Internet, Microsoft Office 365 including Outlook, Automated Clinical Systems and Virtual meeting platforms
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC’s vision, purpose and values
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
  • Some travel will be required with own vehicle and at times public transportation, as clinic outreach is an integral part of this role

Immunization Requirements:

Before beginning employment at LHSC, all new hires will be required to: 

  • Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, Tetanus/ Diphtheria/Polio; Meningitis; 

  • Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing (two step); 

  • Provide proof of Health Canada-approved COVID-19 vaccination reflective of Ontario Health’s current definition of being fully vaccinated
