Nurse Practitioner, Children's Hospital - Paediatric Urology Program

The Division of Paediatric Urology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to join our dynamic team for this temporary full time position. Children’s Hospital is a major regional referral centre committed to multidisciplinary patient and family-centred care. Serving a population of over 1.5 million in both Southwestern Ontario and areas to the North, it specializes in paediatric inpatient and outpatient services to children from birth through age 18. Internationally renowned for medical research it also serves as a teaching hospital for physicians, nurses and other health care partners.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a self-directed nurse prepared at the graduate and post-graduate level, who demonstrates a high level of autonomy working to full scope, both independently and within a collaborative practice model. Using advanced assessment skills and a sound knowledge of clinical therapeutics, the NP demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge base and high degree of clinical competence in acute and chronic disease management.

The NP works with key stakeholders to provide advanced care that optimizes patient outcomes and enhances safety, effectiveness and accessibility. The NP in the Paediatric Urology Program will report to the Director of Inpatient and Ambulatory Care, and will work collaboratively with members of the Paediatric Urology team and key stakeholders to manage, direct and provide comprehensive care for this select patient population. The NP in this program will engage in scholarly activities and advance knowledge by providing clinical leadership, identify opportunities for improving patient care, advancing best practices, promoting professional education and engaging in research.

With a focus on service excellence and patient safety, principal responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrating a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in caring for children and their families with urological disorder throughout the continuum of diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care
  • Conducting NP-Led Clinics in the Outpatient Clinical Setting with a specific focus on paediatric populations requiring urodynamics and biofeedback, voiding dysfunction, and post-operative care
  • Providing telephone and virtual care to improve access to care and avoid unnecessary ER visits/hospital admissions
  • Liaising with hospital and community providers and care partners to promote seamless care across the continuum of health
  • Identifying opportunities for improving patient care and advancing best practices, and facilitating the development of knowledge of staff involved in this patient population
  • Liaising with community providers to advance care across the continuum of health
  • Providing clinical leadership through active engagement in teaching, program development, policy and procedure development and quality improvement initiatives
  • Participating in research and scholarly practice

All duties and responsibilities of the NP conform to professional practice standards of the London Health Sciences Centre guidelines.

Temporary Full-Time

Hours of work:       30 hours per week

Duration:                up to 16 months

Rate of Pay:           $58.98 per hour - $71.85 per hour 

Qualifications

 
  • Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing
  • Current registration in the extended class in any of the following specialties: Paediatrics or Primary Care and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Minimum of 2 recent related experience with paediatrics preferred
  • Current member of the Nurse Practitioner's Association of Ontario (NPAO) or Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO)
  • Mandatory Current Professional Liability Protection
  • Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course: BLS-HCP (C)
  • Valid Driver’s License (G class) with the ability to travel within the South-West LIHN
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in clinical practice, education, program development and research
  • Expertise in functioning in an inter-disciplinary health care environment
  • Recent experience in paediatric urology preferred but not essential
  • Ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues and therapeutic relationships with patients and families
  • Expertise in critical thinking, clinical problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution
  • Effective organizational, conceptual and leadership skills
  • Ability to promote?evidence-informed strategies and initiatives and work in partnership with relevant LHSC staff and physicians 
  • Experience in/or understanding research, program development and evaluation
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal relations and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Demonstrated excellence as a role model for clinical leadership
  • Demonstrated experience with clinical teaching in an academic environment
  • Advanced presentation skills including the application of adult learning principles, change theory and systems theory in a clinical environment
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical practice
  • Self-directed and function independently
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
  • Demonstrated skill in insight, self-awareness and self-management consistent with high emotional intelligence
  • Demonstrated ability to express oneself assertively and effectively in a non-judgmental and respectful manner
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in education and research
  • Ability to function as an independent practitioner and a collaborative team member
  • Eligible for  an Adjunct appointment to an academic institution
  • Proven ability to act empathically, while establishing and maintaining productive relationships
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations and multiple demands
  • Computer proficiency with Internet, Microsoft Office 365 including Outlook, Automated Clinical Systems and Virtual meeting platforms
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC’s vision, purpose and values
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis

Before beginning employment at LHSC, all new hires will be required to:
