Neurophysiologist - Perioperative Services

The neurophysiologist provides real-time intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring during adult and pediatric spine and neurosurgical procedures at LHSC, with a particular focus on complex surgeries involving the brain and spinal cord where there is an increased risk of neurological injury. They continuously assess and interpret electrophysiological data to detect potential neural compromise, enabling timely interventions that minimize surgical risks and prevent neurological damage. Working closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other team members, the neurophysiologist supports safer surgeries, fewer delays, and better patient outcomes. This role also helps maintain high clinical standards and contributes to improving patient safety and aligning with best practices in leading hospitals. 

Regular Full-Time

Rate of Pay:         $64.82 per hour to $81.03

Hours of Work:     37.5 hours per week

This position may be eligible for a relocation and/or retention bonus, subject to the terms and conditions outlined by the organization. Details will be discussed with selected candidates during the recruitment process.

Qualifications

 
  • Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree (B.Sc.) in Science, Health Science, Biological Science (Neurophysiology or Neurosciences preferred)

  • Minimum three (3) years monitoring high-risk spine, cranial, or pediatric neurosurgical procedures

  • Certification in Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring (CNIM) or Diplomate of the American Board of Neurophysiologic Monitoring (DABNM) certification required 

  • Current Certification through the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) or the Canadian Board of Registration of Electroencephalograph Technologists (CBRET) required

  • Active membership with Canadian Association of Neurophysiological Monitoring (CANM) required

  • Advanced proficiency in using modalities such as SSEP, MEP, EEG, EMG, and BAEP during surgical procedures

  • Ability to analyze and interpret electrophysiological signals during surgery and detect early signs of neurological compromise

  • Skilled in making timely, evidence-based clinical judgments in high-stakes, fast-paced surgical environments

  • Strong foundational knowledge to guide monitoring strategies and interpret neurophysiological data in clinical context

  • Clear and concise communication with surgical, anesthesia, and OR teams to relay critical findings and recommend intraoperative adjustments

  • Ability to set up, calibrate, troubleshoot, maintain and stay up to date on complex neurophysiological monitoring systems and software

  • Accurate documentation of intraoperative events, data trends, and clinical decisions in the patient's medical record

  • Familiarity with and application of best practices, hospital policies, and regulatory standards related to IONM, medical and ethical standards

  • Experience training or mentoring residents, fellows, or staff in IONM principles and techniques

  • Proficiency in using EMR and surgical scheduling/communication platforms

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work

  • Involvement in clinical research, data analysis, or initiatives aimed at improving surgical outcomes and patient safety or advancing the field of neurophysiology

  • Demonstrated attention to detail

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of the team

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the principles of patient and family centred care

  • Demonstrated computer proficiency with Automated Clinical Systems

  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
